Sometimes when I am feeling really ambitious I think it would be fun to write a book or produce a documentary on the history of modern crossdressing.
Although “men wearing girl clothes” has been happening for centuries, what I would focus on would be the slow, careful, and private creation of resources and organizations and support groups and communities for girls like us.
For example, what was the first makeup salon that become known for catering to girls like you and I? How did communities and friendships form before the internet (outside of gay bars and drag shows)? All of that.
Recently my friend Jane sent me information about an upcoming documentary about Casa Susanna which was a private club for transwomen and crossdressers beginning in the 1960’s. The documentary airs on June 27th and you can see a trailer here.
This looks really amazing and now I am really thinking about starting a project like this, perhaps with a focus on Minneapolis.
And I have NO idea what is up with the font size here. When I posted this the font was GIANT and could be read from the moon. I tweaked it but now it’s too small. Whatever. I’m moving on lol.
If this is the one shown a while back on the BBC then it was fascinating. I still have it on the TV recorder, and ought to watch it again sometime.
A recent post by Stana mentions the book ‘A Year Among the Girls’ which documents time at Casa Susannah, written under the name Darrell G. Raynor (a pseudonym, but Wiki will let you find the name behind it, although it’s also revealed in the documentary, and it came as a surprise to me, although I’d heard rumours.)
Hannah if you start this project I and many others will send their donation to get it up and running, with just the dream to look forward to. Maybe start small rent a house for summer around Minneapolis.
Hi Hannah,You continue to do great things, and love the activities you provide for the community. As some did in the 90s, attending shows with Venus DeMars and her band was liberating. I thought for a topic or discussion, you could blog about any experiences you had with musical art (again) and how she transformed the Minneapolis music scene literally.https://www.spin.com/2024/07/venus-de-mars-diy-punk-hero-and-social-activist/ Sweetest hugs,Rebeka
