My 2023 Performance Review

After decades of working in the professional world, there’s little I dread more than the annual performance review.

You meet with your boss and discuss your accomplishments from the year as well as your, well, they call them “opportunities” but essentially it’s when you messed up (or you met the expectations but your company always wants you to EXCEED expectations).

You also talk about your goals for the upcoming year. I know they want me to say that I will improve whatever bullshit metric by 10% or whatever but my goal is to remain employed.

And then if you’re lucky you get a 3% salary increase which they tell you is the highest they can give.

After you and your boss go through the motions you return to work annoyed and, in a way, humiliated.

I hate it.

Fortunately I haven’t had a performance review in three years. My boss writes some stuff neither of us will read or ever think about and then gives me a raise and that’s about it. It’s wonderful.

But reflecting upon the year isn’t limited to the workplace. We have already begun to see lists highlighting the Best Movies of 2023 or The Most WTF Moments in Pop Culture of the Year and whatnot. I kinda like seeing these despite the fact that I haven’t heard of half the movies or have no idea who any celebrity is anymore.

These lists also trigger the thought of “that was THIS year?” when it felt like forever ago.

Anyway, please indulge my ego a bit while I share several awards this website has been awarded for the year.

This is not a picture for an award ceremony or anything but a photo from a shoot for Glamour Boutique that I am not sure they ever used but I think it works here, lol

Well, ego probably isn’t the right word (well, it probably is) but I am proud of what I do. I am humbled and grateful for you all for reading and commenting on my posts. It really, really means a lot. Thank you all very much,

Without further ado, here we are!

  1. Hi Hannah,

Congratulations on you much deserved blogging awards. You truly are an inspiration.

I have managed people for well over 40 yrs. and I totally agree that performance reviews are useless. In fact worst than useless, then can be detrimental and allow your managers not to truly manage. I try to sit with each team member each day to discuss how I can help them get over whatever hurdle they face that day. I to set objectives for each team member with the understanding that they may change because demands of the world and of the business can change rapidly.

That said, thank you for your blog, enjoy the accolades and have a very happy Holiday.

  2. I used to work in an industry monitored by a Federal agency. They came in from time to time to evaluate our performance, and grade it relative to other such facilities nation-wide. It did not take me long to realize they were not going to be happy until everybody was like the kids in Lake Woebegone: everybody above-average.

  3. Well let’s get this done, Hannah. Just to give you some guidance before we begin, we’re grading on a 5 point scale. So a 1 is “Needs Improvement”, 2 is “Opportunities for Development”, 3 is “Meets Expectations”, 4 is “Above Expectations”, and 5 is… well nobody ever gets a 5 so don’t worry about that. We literally are not allowed to give anyone a 5 on anything, ever.

The first category is Provides Excellent Customer Service. And you’ve been rated a 5. Huh, that’s interesting. Look at you already breaking the scale. Okay. Moving on.

Second we have Works Well With Others. There I’m seeing a… another 5. Weird. That’s good for you, of course.

Next up is Always Looks Fabulous. That must be a new category this year. I don’t remember that from last year. And your rating— a 6? It’s a 5 point scale, how did you get a 6?

The fourth category is Open to Feedback and Change. This one is really important to me personally as a leader, Hannah. And here I see you’ve been rated as 5 again. So that’s consistent if nothing else.

Now our last area is Provides Leadership in Cuteness. Cuteness? And you received a 12. A 12 in being a cuteness leader. Out of 5.

Congratulations on receiving the best performance review of all time. Your reward is a firm handshake. And you can log out an hour early if you’d like this Friday. Sorry, we’re all tightening out belts right now. Thanks for everything you do.

    -Sophie 🙂

  5. Working for the State of MN, they used to have “exceeds standards.” Then HR got the dumb idea of having the very best grade of only “fully meets standards,” so the desire to do better went out the window and everyone is now equal, even though there are many who exceed and don’t get the accolades he/she should for their efforts.

  6. Likewise, congratulations on having placed in the top ten (or 11 😉 transgender, transwoman and crossdresser blogs and websites. There are a ton of bloggers out there, so ranking highly is a meaningful accomplishment. IMHO this is because of the effort you put in.

  7. As I reflect over the past year and what led me to finally come out to myself, my journey reinforces to me that things do happen for a reason. Spending time reading about others experiences in both cross dressing and transitioning has opened my heart up and allowed me to better understand myself and others. The journey has been exciting, scary, addicting, painful, and sometimes lonely, but the beginning of becoming free. Although I am not out to everyone and don’t know whether my journey stops at dressing, I know that none of this has shaken my relationship with God. Just like I can look back over my life and start to recognize where my feminine self was trying to blossom, I also look back and see where God never left me even when self will would lead me astray. God does not care how I dress or who I identify as. He does care about me and wants me to get out of myself and help and love others. Making friendships in our community hasn’t been all that easy which largely hinges on the need for confidentiality and safety, however, I would never have been able to get through the year without being able to lean on my relationship with God and the experience that others have been so graciously open to sharing through websites like this. Thank you to all like Hannah who have taken the time to share their experience, strength, and hope.

  8. Congratulations Hannah!!
Here’s an “attagirl”…now get back to work haha! I flipped through the list of CD Blogs and you’re in very goid company.

Thank you for providing a safe and welcoming place for all of us gender pilgrims to find rest and discuss what’s on our hearts and minds. It’s not easy understanding the “why” of being a man with a compulsion to be feminine, but your happy home on the web reminds us we’re not alone:)
