Hello, my name is Sophie Summers, and it is a genuine pleasure to be here with you.
They say time flies, and that couldn’t be truer! It feels like just yesterday I was taking my first tentative steps out in public as “Sophie.” In reality, it was over forty years ago, in the last century.
For more than twenty-five years, my passion has also been my profession. As a makeup artist and the owner of Translife Limited, I have had the privilege of meeting many wonderful people within this vibrant community.
I cherish the early days at the Philbeach Hotel, Ron Storms, and at The WayOut Club with the delightful Steffan, Caroline, and Vicky. I also remember with fondness the beginnings of Sparkle, a brilliant event initiated by Kimberley and rooted in the activities of the UK Angels. I had the honour of being involved in those early days alongside Leah True, Sue, and the tireless Bella Jay. I believe I am credited with establishing the charitable status for the event.
These memories are ones I will never forget, and they have inspired me to continue giving back to the community as a token of gratitude for enriching my life. Over the years, I feel I have transitioned from a nervous teen to a custodian of our community’s history in some small way. I am blessed to have met many remarkable individuals, such as Janet Scott from the Beaumont Society, who sadly passed away some years ago. Janet always kept me grounded, and we shared numerous TV show panels together. One particularly memorable appearance was on the Kilroy show, where we debated the “Christian Right wing” on the merits of crossdressing. “It’s a Sin”—an apt title for a record!
Bringing things up to date, like many, I have embraced the 21st century through YouTube. I strive to create videos that portray our community in the positive light it deserves. It is not always easy, but it is always rewarding!
How would I sum up my life so far? Learn to love yourself, regret nothing, and always strive to be the best version of yourself.
