Ask Hannah!

As someone who has dressed for years, what are some essential things every girl needs to know to chose outfits and dresses that enhance their best features while minimizing their more masculine aspects??

I think that instead of looking at physical features as binary it’s more helpful to be a little more specific.

And I don’t mean to be a bitch (I promise I will let people know when I am being a bitch, lol), but what I mean is physical features and attributes are not exclusive to any gender identity.

What I mean is that broad shoulder and squarish jaws and heart shaped faces and tapered fingers are features that men, women, and gender non-conforming people have.

Instead, I recommend shifting your perspective a tiny bit. Instead of seeking out an outfit that minimizes your masculine aspects, think about what you want to specifically minimize.

For example!

I have broad shoulders. When I look for outfit ideas, I focus on finding a dress that minimizes broad shoulders. I will google “outfits that minimize broad shoulders”, for example.

Without my thigh pads and corset, I have a rectangular, cylinder shaped frame. So, I will look for dresses that are designed to give the impression of hips. Peplum tops/dresses are a good example of this:

When I have my makeup done, I don’t ask my artist to “turn my male face into a feminine face”. Instead, I ask my makeup artist to minimize my jawline and add contouring.

I think you hit the nail on the head when you wrote about emphasizing your best features. Think about what you like about your body and what you want to draw attention to. Again, google what you are looking for. Searches for “clothes that emphasize long legs” can be very helpful.

Many people, from across the gender spectrum, have aspects of themselves that they want to minimize or emphasize or draw attention to or from. If we stop thinking of a physical attribute as feminine or masculine then we can start dressing for our specific body shape and we can start working towards our presentation goals.

  1. Great topic Hannah. As you have indicated in past blogs, there are cisgender men and women that are not completely accepting of themselves which is good news for all of us. We don’t need perfect in dressing. The femininity for me comes from inside and radiates outward. Certainly clothes help accentuate this, but no matter what I wear, I have always found that I am most pleased with my pics when I am in a good spiritual place where I can let the feminine part of me out without any reservation. A frame of mind is often what makes us look the most beautiful!
