I’ve read a lot of Roald Dahl’s books over the years, but I had never heard of his story ‘The Enormous Crocodile’ until I was invited to see the new musical adaptation as performed by the Children’s Theatre Company.
And oh my goodness it was amazing.
From their website:
The musical is a playful, high-energy production filled with colorful characters, catchy songs, and plenty of silly surprises. However, the show also includes moments that may startle or overwhelm more sensitive young audience members, including actors talking directly to the audience and, at times, coming into the seating area.
The titular crocodile is both sneaky and comically menacing as he attempts to eat children using “secret plans and clever tricks.” His plans are foiled in exaggerated, over-the-top ways meant to be funny, not frightening—but the idea of a crocodile trying to trick children so he can eat them may be unsettling for some.
I wasn’t prepared for the practical magic that was used for the story. Puppets, costumes, and talented actors brought this silly story to life. Obviously the crocodile is the star of the show, and he was made real with different types of puppets, whether it was the actor Taya Ming chasing other animals around the stage with a giant, snapping crocodile head, or scooting around with a full body costume.

Of course, a puppet needs help in order for it to be brought to life. The cast played different roles, whether they were playing kids exploring the jungle or giant birds plucking up the courage to be brave. The music is fun, and the titular crocodile just ooooozes charisma. You almost root for him (even though he wants to eat children, lol).
