I received a comment recently that pretty much suggested only non-passing transgender girls are in danger of harassment, discrimination, and violence.
Of course, this isn’t true.
I don’t believe in passing. Who is to say what physical characteristics are feminine or not? Every girl, whether cis or trans, looks different.
While I will concede that not being clocked can possibly help a t-girl feel a little safer, safety is never a guarantee.
Violence towards the transgender community will unfortunately always exist, no matter how pretty or feminine we are. As we close out this year’s Transgender Awareness Week, it’s important to remember we have a long way to go and a lot of work to do.

And yet so many within our own community continue to keep this illegitimate standard alive which doesn’t do any of us any favors. Just another way to try and compete with one another which is not what any of this is all about. We need more support and understanding of each other as we are all that many of us have.

Beautifully said, Hannah. No one’s safety or worth should ever hinge on how well they ‘pass.’ Every trans person deserves to exist without fear or conditions. Thank you for speaking truth with compassion.

Oh my gosh, I didn’t know this was Transgender Awareness Week. I’ve been so busy and completely off social media that I almost completely missed it. I guess that means I have no choice but to go shopping tomorrow. Gotta represent, right?
