I work for a college and a lot of our students are much younger than I am. I like the younger generations for a lot of reasons and I think they are painted with a very broad and unfair brush. For the most part, they work hard and are trying to make their way through a world that is much harder than the one I lived in when I was their age.
They are also funnier than I will ever be.
But when you interact with generations other than your own, both older and younger, you hear new words and phrases you are not familiar with. I admit I have to google certain words so I can understand what some of our students are saying.
This is normal. When I was in my teens I used words the older generation didn’t use, but they didn’t have Google to turn to so they could know what I was talking about.
Keeping up with an ever evolving language isn’t easy and gets overwhelming sometimes to realize there’s a new word or phrase you need to be aware. This is especially tricky when a new word enters a lexicon where other, similar words don’t have a definitive, universally agreed meaning.
What I mean is there’s no general consensus on what gender nuanced words actually mean. Many of us disagree on what crossdressing really is or who is “allowed” to identify as transgender.
