The Freewheelin’ Hannah McKnight

Saturday was SO fun.

Shannonlee and I shot another episode of the Help Me, Hannah! series I am doing with En Femme. We shot ON LOCATION at Allure Intimates in Saint Paul. I have been shopping at Allure for a few years and some of my favorite lingerie has come from their boutiques. The MN T-Girls have had several private shopping events over the years there as well.

One of the goals of this series is to show the realness of, well, all of this is.

A picture from a photo shoot shows the result of time, patience, and money. But getting there is half the fun, and the journey is the destination.

What those two cliches mean to me is that the creation of oneself can be pretty enjoyable (and frustrating and difficult and discouraging) and the true value of doing anything is what you learn along the way.

When we shot the tucking video a few weeks ago it, well, it wasn’t pretty. But it wasn’t supposed to be. It was meant to show the realities and the work that can go into finding the right garment for yourself.

Saturday’s filming was about bras and finding the right one for your body. I had a very honest conversation with two bra fitters and we did a demonstration of what a bra fitting is like.

I think it’s important to be honest in this part of our lives. I’m sure many of us want to wear a size zero or whatever and we might try to wear clothes, especially bras, that are not the right size, but it might not be, well, safe, to do so.

And look, I get it. But I realized the no one has to know the size of anything I’m wearing. I should wear clothes that fit, not clothes that I WANT to fit.

AND! Clothing sizes are weird and arbitrary and inconsistent. Some shops think I am a size 12 (and I usually am) but another, honest to God, says I am a solid 20.

That’s a significant difference.

Anyway.

Although shooting these videos is getting easier (well, perhaps getting more normal), what makes or breaks a segment is whether or not the equipment is cooperating as well as whether or not I am not a complete idiot. I don’t film with a script or a teleprompter or cue cards or anything. Maybe I should but I kind of like the spontaneity that these videos have. I do have an outline and talking points but for the most part I am just free-wheeling.

Sometimes we’ll film something and I get tongue-tied and we reshoot. At this shoot I had a hard time getting started and I’d like to share an outtake from that day,

Silly things like this where I can laugh at myself tend to help me loosen up and once I do the rest of the shoot goes fairly well.

I learned sooooo much about bras and I can’t wait for the video to post.

Thank you to all of you who posted questions! They were very helpful when it came to the video itself.

Love, Hannah

  2. Gosh, this reminds me that it has been a dozen years since I had my first bra fitting. I recall being nervous when I asked for help in the lingerie department, but the SA soon put me at ease. I appreciated her kindness, courtesy and professionalism, and left with the best fitting bras I had worn up to that time.
