The Butterfly Effect

Hi! I have a new article for The Breast Form Store!

Secrets and gender identity go together like a garter belt and stockings.

Wait, that is not quite right.

I suppose what I mean is that keeping this aspect to ourselves is pretty common, but that doesn’t mean we WANT to.

I know that for some of us we feel a great amount of shame when it comes to who we are (we shouldn’t but I get it) but what we all have in common is that who we are makes us very happy (even if that joy is part of other emotions we feel).

When we have something in our lives that makes us happy we probably want to share it. You see a funny reel on Instagram, you want to share it. You discover a new song, you want your friends to hear it. You feel happy when you paint your nails, you want to flaunt your new crimson talons.

But we probably default to fearing terror at the idea of coming out (either by our own accord or through discovery). There’s the normal fears about The Talk going badly, but we also know that even if The Talk goes really well we have to accept that THIS is out there. Someone else KNOWS and our secret is carried by someone else.

And that someone else may not protect it as well as we do.

I can’t say I’ve regretted coming out to the people I’ve come out to, but there are those I wish I came out in a different way or at a different time in my journey. But things change as we live our lives. Relationships with those we came out to can change and all of a sudden your most sacred secret may not be as sacred to someone else anymore.

Coming out is one of the most consequential things you can do but it is probably something that you can do on your own terms. You can likely choose WHO you come out to, WHEN you do, and HOW you do. IF you aren’t CAUGHT before, that is.

That being said, with The Talk being something you have control of, then you have the power to take your time and think things through. But of course this could lead to paralysis by analysis where we spend too much time thinking and overthinking about it that we never actually do it.

If you have thoughts on this writing, please comment on The Breast Form Store’s site so they know people are reading their articles.

Love, Hannah
