Ask Hannah!

I’m just curious on your thoughts about wigs and how many is too many. I currently have 14 and love them all. I would love to leave them on their stands around the house but believe it would be too much for my supportive wife. Especially when we have visitors.
Thanks for your thoughts and I love reading your blogs.

I don’t think there’s a specific number, but rather other things to consider.

Quality wigs, even synthetic wigs, are expensive. If you are accumulating something, anything, and it causes a financial strain, then it’s probably best to rein in your spending.

Something to consider is how often you use whatever it is you purchase. If you spend, oh, I don’t know, fifty thousand dollars on a boat (I have no idea how much a boat costs), and you only use it once a year, then it might not have been a wise investment. If you are en femme two or three times a month, are fourteen wigs really necessary?

Finally, consider how your collection impacts those who live with you. I own a lot of clothes, but it’s easy to keep them, well, contained. After all, clothes belong in the closet. But another passion of mine? Books. I own a LOT of books.

In our bedroom we have two bookshelves which are both about seven feet tall. In my home office, I have five more bookshelves, plus wall mounted shelves. All of them are stacked with books.

Annnnnnd I also have boxes and boxes of books in our crawlspace. I would love to get more shelves to put into other rooms and fill them with more books.

However, my wife isn’t very keen on me turning every room into a library. She likes to decorate (and is quite good at it) and likes each room in our home to have it’s own… vibe, I suppose. Tall bookshelves tend to make a room a little claustrophobic.

So, I keep my collection more or less contained to two rooms. It’s important to keep a shared living space a place of harmony for all who live there. Taking over a room just to put more books in it would be unfair.

If one’s collection, whatever it may be, dominates a home that is shared between two people, then it might come off as a little selfish. And if the collection has the potential to trigger a conversation that your partner may not wish to have when people visit, then it becomes another source of annoyance.

Love, Hannah

  1. Let’s see. In our house we have… 8 different sets of bookshelves and some wall shelves across 4 rooms. One of those rooms is set up as a dedicated library. But if you’re including physical media in general, there’s another unit for vinyl records and two cabinets of DVD’s and Blu-Rays, adding a 5th room. And then there’s that other shelf unit, and the wall shelves in my office that are kind of a mess, that have some books on them amongst other detritus.

I keep my wigs, clothes, and shoes in one closet. Basically the entire rest of our home has been given over to books. And cats. But this article isn’t about cats.

  2. I have 9 total but it is a misnomer in that I typically only move back n forth between 3 and several I own more than one of the same style (discount sales and in case they are discontinued) which are styles that look fit and wear so well. As for books? don’t get us started. I love books and so does my wife they are like old friends. To accommodate things I bought a standing moderate quality wardrobe that is in a ‘hobby’ room in our basement. Most of the wardrobe and overflow cosmetics wigs and heels get stored in there plus some in our closet space in the our bedroom. But that being said it is time to clean house a bit … as they say in Germany zu viel ist zu viel! Oh and of course we have cats who are kind enough to let us live here so long as we open their food each morning. Cheers!
