Visiting Venus

Hi!

I had a busy Saturday and the highlight of the day (and the year) was sitting down with the iconic Venus de Mars!

Venus is a musician who has been recording and performing since the 1980’s, both as a solo artist as well as with her groups, specifically All The Pretty Horses.

It’s hard to understate Venus’ contribution to gender representation. She was the first transgender person I was aware of when I was younger. Musicians who blurred the lines of gender presentation, such as Prince, Patty Smith, and David Bowie, were common in the 80’s, but Venus was the first person, musician or otherwise, that called herself transgender that I had heard of.

Venus was kind enough to be interviewed for an upcoming episode of Wishlist. Wishlist is all about girls like us and helping make their wish come true, but from time to time we will feature girls who have already made their wish a reality. In our interview we chatted about how Venus got her start and discussed her career and what’s next for her.

If you’d like to listen to Venus’ music, you can find it here. Spin magazine did an interview with her earlier this year if you’d like to get to know her in the meantime.

Huge thank you to Venus for her time and huge thank you to Sophie who did all the tricky audio and visual magic.

Love, Hannah
